My Options

If your physician wants you to undergo a sleep study, make sure that you are sent to a facility that has been certified by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM)

IS SLEEP APNEA TREATABLE?
YES!

CPAP- Continuous Positive Airways Pressure. CPAP is delivered through a mask that covers the nose and mouth from a small air pressure generator. Technology has markedly improved over the last year and newer machines allow auto-pressure adjustment, feedback monitoring via a smart card and integrated humidification. New mask options are becoming available constantly. Bipap or bi-level is also an option that your physician may consider.

Oral appliance therapy – Oral appliance therapy is an accepted alternative to CPAP that is less cumbersome and well-tolerated. They are customized devices made by a specialized dentist to move the lower jaw forward.

Surgery – Available in select circumstances and should be performed by an otolaryngologist with expensive experience in treating patients with sleep apnea.
OTHER: positional therapy, oxygen therapy, adjunctive medications and other options may be considerations.

ALL PATIENTS WITH OSA SHOULD CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING:

WHAT IF I DO NOTHING?
Sleep apnea will slowly worsen with age in the absence of major weight loss (if this is a factor).
